Submission Guidelines
The Host Library is a fanfiction archive that is by invitation only. ONLY individuals who have been invited to become an author during an open submission period may upload stories to this archive. If you wish to submit your work for consideration, please check the Site News for information pertaining to the next submission period. Any work submitted outside of the regular submission period will be immediately deleted. All work that is accepted for publication MUST adhere to the following guidelines and rules. There will be no exceptions.
Note: If any of these rules and regulations look at all familiar, it is because we are a huge fans of Pel’s Twilight Fanfiction Archive Ramblings and Thoughts and have shamelessly borrowed a lot of her guidelines. Others are the standard guidelines provided by the eFiction Software.

Plot and Character Rules
- Canon-Compliance. All stories held within this archive must reasonably adhere to the canon universe of The Host, as created by Stephenie Meyer. Canon includes any information disseminated to the general public by the author beyond what is included within the pages of the book. This includes information from interviews with the author, information found on the author’s website and any other forms of communication that the author has made public. This means that all plots, characters, and ideas must remain within the established storyline/universe within the book. All pairings must conform to the established relationships within the canon as well. All of the precepts regarding canon-compliance and established relationships are absolute and non-negotiable.
- Personal preferences dictates that all pairings are heterosexual and genfic. If there is an individual in The Host that the author explicitly states is homosexual, this rule will change.
- Currently, Alternate Universe (AU) submissions are not accepted. Although this rule may change in the future, there are currently NO exceptions.
- No stories involving a crossover with another universe will be accepted. Everyone needs to stay within their own fandoms. Visiting Care Bears, Harry Potter characters, and Star Trek away teams are strictly prohibited. This rule also applies to real people. No actors/actresses/musicians/politicians etc. should be featured. They need to stay living in their realities.
- Mary-Sue and Gary-Stu are the bane of our existence. Their presence or the presence of anyone who even slightly resembles them is strictly prohibited. Making up your own original character is acceptable as long as that character is plausible.
- Songfics are strictly prohibited. This rule is NEVER going to change, so don’t send such submissions.
- Plagiarism is also strictly prohibited. Anyone who plagiarizes is the lowest scum that walks on this earth and will be subjected to all the derision and ridicule at our disposal, as well as any legal action that is appropriate.
Submission Rules
- All stories, titles, and summaries must be written in Standard English. This is non-negotiable.
- All stories must be proofread and be written using correct grammar and spelling. We ARE grammar Nazis and although we will not flinch at one or two typographical errors in a story, anything that makes us want to restructure sentences and use our red pens on every other word is certainly not going to be acceptable. Get yourself a good beta and be sure that you do your own editing.
- All stories must contain a rating. Since Stephenie Meyer is a popular YA writer, stories in the main archive must fall within the G to PG-13 category. Graphic descriptions of a pornographic nature are strictly prohibited.
- All submissions must be in the standard narrative form. It should be patently obvious whose point of view a story is in by the context, there is no need to label story sections So-and-So’s POV. In most cases, it is a writing faux pas to change point of view in the middle of a scene or chapter, let alone a sentence. Changes can occur in a different scene, chapter, or time frame.
Story Submission Formatting and Rules
- All submissions to this archive MUST be accompanied by a complete disclaimer. If a disclaimer that uses suitable language is not included, the site administrators reserve the right to add a disclaimer. Those who repeatedly disregard this rule will be banned.
Sample DisclaimerDisclaimer: All publicly recognizable characters, settings, etc. are the property of their respective owners. The original characters and plot are the property of the author. The author is in no way associated with the owners, creators, or producers of any media franchise. No copyright infringement is intended.
- All stories must be submitted within the proper story category, and if appropriate, sub-category. Please do not add your story multiple times. It will only make us want to revoke your rights as an author and delete all of your submissions.
- All chapters of a story must be submitted under the same story and title. Upload the first chapter of your story, then go to Manage Stories in your account to add additional chapters. They should NEVER be submitted as separate stories. They should not be a separate submission.
- All stories must have a title. Anything “Untitled” will be deleted.
- All stories must have a summary. Any summary that starts with: This is my first fanfic so be nice, I am bad at writing summaries…, Read Me!, etc. are not acceptable.
- All stories must be uploaded as text files (txt) saved within notepad. This is the only format The Library will accept. Cutting and pasting into the story file box will work as well. If you wish to format your story, please use the corresponding html tags. For further technical help, please visit Author and Artist FAQ.
Art Submission Formatting and Rules
- Images must be original art, not photoshop manipulations of copyrighted material. Unless you hold the copyright on an image or all the material found within your image, don't even think about submitting it.
- Images must be reasonably canon compliant.
- Images must be no larger than 800 pixels by 600 pixels. Size cannot exceed 350 KB.
- The only acceptable images formats are .PNG, .GIF, .JPG, and .JPEG
Reviews
- Begging for reviews is strictly prohibited.
- Flaming is strictly prohibited. If you want to leave constructive criticism, that is fine. Please see the reviewing section for good examples of how this is done.
- If someone takes the time to review your story, please be sure to respond with a thanks.
- If you decide to make a story one of your favorites, please take the time to review it. This is only polite.
- While no one is morally obligated to review, we strongly recommend that you do. Reviews are the currency by which fanfiction authors are paid. If you enjoyed a story, it is only right that you tell the author so.
Final Notes
There will probably be a lot of fanfiction and fanart for The Host that will not comply with my rules, but will still be great. The Library is by no means be the ultimate source for the fandom. Our submission rules are merely a reflection of what we enjoy about the fanfiction and The Host. If you disagree with any of the rules, feel free to submit your complaints to the 86file@thehostlibrary.com, where they will be given the attention that they deserve.
Anyone found in violation of any of the above rules will be subject to the jurisdiction of the administrators, who are an evil lot. Accounts may be suspended or removed at the discretion of the site administrators. The site administrators also reserve the right to change and or modify the rule as is needed, and as they see fit.
